Taste of Asia: A Carlisle restaurant worth celebrating | News and Star

Taste of Asia, co-owned by Shama Ali Goliyadi and her partner Kam, is a pan-Asian fusion restaurant slightly out of the way on London Road, offering up a mix of flavours from Japan, China, Thailand, and India.

While restaurants come and go for similar reasons, Ms Goliyadi said it’s about continuing a lifelong connection with the culinary world.

She said: “My partner Kam is Chinese and his family had the Sunny Takeaway in Carlisle before they sold it.

“I am from India and my father was a restauranteur for many years.”

He died not too long ago and Ms Goliyadi, a doctor, said she then decided to open the restaurant to continue her father’s legacy.

“The flavours that we are presenting are authentic flavours with a modern twist.

“These dishes are what we have grown up relishing and we continue to use our family secret recipes to prepare them.”

Popular menu items include Hongkong Prawns, Scallop Teriyaki, Lamb Biryani, Green Thai Curry, Angel Eggs and Seafood Mixed Grill.

“The food scene in Carlisle is really becoming vibrant with lots of styles of cuisine.

“We would like to think that we are helping the growth of variety,” Ms Goliyadi said.

On Saturday, March 8, the restaurant welcomed a party of workers from a major factory in the city celebrating International Women’s Day and, accordingly, all guests were provided with complimentary Pink Lady cocktails.

After just passing their one year in business anniversary, Taste of Asia is also looking to grow in other ways, with plans for more themed events and a new loyalty club.

“We are really excited with our forthcoming year.

“We are growing our loyal customer base and we will look to feature some themed events that will enhance the dining experience with us.

“We are looking at starting a loyalty club, which will have their own events.

“There are other plans in the pipeline.”

The restaurant also partners with local businesses to provide discounts for employees: “We know that people work hard for their money and sometimes dining out can be a luxury.

“We also know that employers look for ways to reward the staff in some ways, and have partnered with some businesses to offer a variety of discount offers.”

It’s a savvy move for a business that is outside of the busy city centre – partnering with businesses to encourage visits, and as it moves into its second year, the proactive approach may prove influential.
