Two people have been killed and 14 injured in a suspected car-ramming attack in Germany, it has been reported. The incident happened in Mannheim.
Bild added that a “lifeless person” covered with a tarpaulin lay near a tram stop. Police said: “Due to the police deployment, citizens are asked to avoid Mannheim city centre and to take a wide detour.”
Video on social media appears to show people obscuring the view of at least one person injured on the floor with their coats following the suspected attack.
Local outlet MANNHEIM24 suggested a black SUV drove at high speed into a crowd of people.
One witness told the Mannheimer Morgen newspaper: “It is terrible here, nobody knows what happened, you only see injured people and the dead, and you don’t know what to do.”
So far, police have confirmed one death.
The driver of the vehicle is in hospital, Bild reports. The man is a 40-year-old German from Rhineland-Palatinate, the newspaper added.
This was confirmed by the Baden-Württemberg Interior Minister Thomas Strobl.
